With the first round of Brazil’s presidential election set for October 4, audio recordings targeting right-wing front-runner Senator Flávio Bolsonaro have surfaced and unsettled the campaign. Published by an investigative outlet, the audio reportedly captures exchanges with Daniel Vorcaro, a banker held over alleged fraud, regarding funding for a biographical film about his father. Vorcaro is reported to have been detained while trying to flee the country, in connection with a fraud case said to have left a vast hole in a credit-guarantee fund. Flávio Bolsonaro’s side has not denied the contact with Vorcaro itself, but denies the substance of the reports and any wrongful intent. Polls Tilt Toward Lula

Since the reports, runoff polls have widened in Lula’s favor. A CNT/MDA survey released in mid-June put a runoff at Lula 49.3% to Flávio Bolsonaro 36.8%. A Datafolha poll in late June also showed Lula ahead, 47% to 43%.

Still, some observers note the two remain competitive in first-round preferences, and how far the scandal translates into votes may shift with new facts and the course of the investigation.

In my reading, what makes these allegations weighty is timing. Whether the scandal itself holds up is for the courts and investigators to determine, but at the very moment runoff-minded opinion was hardening, an old scar of Brazilian politics — campaign money and legal risk — surfaced again. That psychological effect is showing up in the numbers.

At the same time, polls are only a snapshot of the present. With the two still competitive in the first round, how far voters see the allegations as "priced in" will depend on facts yet to come. The point is to avoid jumping to conclusions and to keep following primary sources.
