I ride an SR400. One of the recurring complaints among SR400 owners is vibration on long touring days. After about 300 km one-way, both hands were numb β pretty rough.
What the Power Beam is
The part with a reputation for cutting that vibration on the SR400 is the Power Beam from Y's Gear. It mounts to the frame and increases chassis rigidity, suppressing vibration. Fairly well known in the SR community.
Installing it
Re-applied the sticker myself before fitting. The fitting itself takes about 30 minutes if you're used to this kind of work. Two caveats: the rear-side bolt is awkward to torque, and the bolts tend to loosen after a while of riding, so periodic re-tightening is needed.
Riding it after
Power Beam reviews split between "couldn't feel a thing" and "noticeable difference." For me, the moment I rode after fitting it, I could feel the chassis rigidity step up. Vibration is clearly down too.
Before, the bike kind of swayed and floated through corners. After, it rides crisply. I came in skeptical. Now I'm convinced.
Buy the part. If you ride an SR400 and you're suffering on long-distance vibration β try it once.

About Power Beam / Performance Damper
- Origin: The "Performance Damper" technology developed by Yamaha Motor β a vibration-damping mechanism also adopted on Lexus four-wheelers.
- Principle: A dedicated damper converts the small frame-borne strain vibrations into heat through oil viscosity, absorbing them.
- Y'S GEAR: Yamaha's official accessories brand; develops and sells model-specific kits.
- For the SR400: Aimed at reducing the vibration peculiar to a single-cylinder engine, easing long-distance fatigue.
Installation and use
- Install time: About 30 minutes to an hour for someone used to it. The rear-side stay needs careful torque control.
- Re-torque: Bolts can loosen after a while of riding β periodic checking is recommended.
- Fitment: Some year models or modified bikes may not be compatible. Always check the fitment chart before buying.
- Felt difference: Effects vary; riding posture, tires, tire pressure and road surface all play in.
The SR400 in context
- History: Launched in 1978 alongside the SR500. An air-cooled four-stroke single, a long-running model.
- Character: Kick-start (including FI models) and a simple, classic style.
- End of production: Wound up in 2021 with a final limited edition. Still popular on the used market.
- Where the vibration comes from: The pulse of the 399 cc single is the appeal β and on long rides, also the source of fatigue.
The SR400 Performance Damper (the Power Beam equivalent) is available on Amazon β for any SR400 owner battling vibration fatigue on long-distance touring, Yamaha's genuine damping kit is one strong option to consider.
